The Nigerian Army disclosed the identities and photos of soldiers who were fatally attacked last Thursday in Delta State, sharing this information through a statement on its official X profile on Monday evening. TIMES TREND NEWS previously covered the incident, noting the deaths of the soldiers, which included four officers, in the Okuama community within the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Earlier communications from military leaders indicated that these soldiers lost their lives in an effort to mediate peace between two conflicting communities, Okuama and Okoloba. Despite initial reports from military sources and President Bola Tinubu stating that 16 soldiers had perished, the Army's latest release on X included the names and photographs of 17 deceased personnel. The post identified Lieutenant Colonel AH Ali as the commander of the operation, with Majors SD Shafa and DE Obi, and Captain U Zakari among the fallen. Thirteen other soldiers were also named.

The tragic event has drawn condemnation from President Bola Tinubu, alongside many across the nation, with the President demanding that those responsible be apprehended and brought to justice.

The deaths were first announced by military officials on Saturday. Following this, on Sunday morning, several homes in the Okuama community were reportedly destroyed in an act of retaliation, attributed to soldiers. The aftermath saw many community residents fleeing to nearby areas, driven by the fear of further military action. Although the precise number of casualties from this subsequent violence remains unknown, the military denied any involvement in these retaliatory actions in a statement on Monday.
